Travel Warning Update for January 30, 2017

Last night, the Head of the Department of Homeland Security issued the following statement:

Release Date:
January 29, 2017

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
Contact: 202-282-8010

WASHINGTON – In applying the provisions of the president’s executive order, I hereby deem the entry of lawful permanent residents to be in the national interest.

Accordingly, absent the receipt of significant derogatory information indicating a serious threat to public safety and welfare, lawful permanent resident status will be a dispositive factor in our case-by-case determinations.

While this is certainly a good thing, we still caution even green card holders about traveling as there could still be long delays and officers who are not as knowledgeable about what is going on.  Also, remember, if you are stuck at the border,  do NOT relinquish your green card.  Do NOT sign form I-407, no matter what the officer states.  Assert your rights and especially assert your right to speak with an attorney.
